The conspiracy press lives at your expense (case study)

First, the facts. The husband of former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 82-year-old Paul Pelosi, was attacked in his home at night by an individual who smashed his head with a hammer, regretting that he did not have the opportunity to break Nancy Pelosi’s knees (she was not present at the time).

Within the hour, the massive American conspiracy machine was set in motion to explain that it was ‘impossible’ that the assailant had broken into Paul Pelosi’s home, that it was ‘probable’ that the assailant was in fact a gay prostitute rented by Paul Pelosi (sic), and other delirious nonsense.

All this, without the slightest hint of factual evidence. The conspiracy theorist never bothers with mediocre factual considerations: like a magician or a marabout, he *sees* the true reality and that is enough for him.

The police images have now been released. They show that the assailant did break into Paul Pelosi’s home, exactly as indicated, that he did smash the 82 year old man’s skull with a hammer, that Paul Pelosi had called the police for help by phone, and that the assailant did intend to break Nancy Pelosi’s kneecaps by his own admission — because this genius brags about it.

The facts being established, there are two reactions.

That of Elon Musk, who had circulated a number of questions about the episode, and who called the Pelosi family to apologize. Noble and estimable, but of course it takes a certain psychic robustness, and a zest of decency, to acknowledge that one was wrong.

The opposite reaction is from the author of this Federalist article — 1 in 10,000,000, on the social networks — who tries to ignite new conspiracy scenarios ‘SO MANY QUESTIONS’, still without any material evidence, and who proudly states that contrary to what was alleged the assailant is not at all a lunatic nor mentally unwell, but on the contrary holds a very coherent discourse on the responsibility of Pelosi and the Democrats in the avatars of American politics. Cracking the skull of an 82 year old man = mental health.

The lesson of this episode? Many of us here abhor and fight the delusional extremism of a certain left, with excellent motives. But don’t be fooled by this conspiracy press, the charlatans of reasoning who are willingly ignorant of the facts.

For, this cheap conspiracy press lives at your expense, and distracts you from the real battles, leaving you like dehydrated turkeys in the middle of the desert, convinced that you hold the secret of water.
